- Purpose
Washington University Crew Team was founded in 1985 as a group to provide Washington University in St. Louis students the opportunity to row and/or learn to row at a competitive collegiate level. Our goals shall be to increase the presence of the sport on campus, increase the skill level of all participants, represent Washington University in St. Louis at the highest level in competition, and create a fun and social environment.
- Membership
The Washington University Crew Team shall be composed of two squads, a ‘Men's Team’ and a ‘Women's Team’. Each squad will be comprised of members of its intended sex, except in the case of coxswains, which may be coed for either squad. The criteria which must be met in order to become a member of either squad on the Washington University Crew Team are as follows:
- Each member must be an enrolled student of Washington University in St. Louis and in good standing with the university.
- Dues, as set by the Treasurer in accordance with Section IV, Subsection C, point e, must be paid 30 days after the first official day of practice each semester.
- If all dues cannot be met in this time frame, a well-defined payment plan must be set up with the Treasurer within the first 30 days of the first official practice.
- Coaches
The Washington University Crew Team
- Head Coach
- Shall be hired by the Washington University in St. Louis Athletic Office.
- Shall plan all regattas and trips.
- Shall actively work to improve the quality of the team and its members.
- Assistant Coach(es)
- Shall be hired by the Washington University in St. Louis Athletic Office.
- Shall assist the Head Coach in the planning of all regattas and trips.
- Shall actively work to improve the quality of the team and its members.
- Shall report to the Head Coach.
- Officers
The Washington University Crew Team officers shall include:
- President
- Shall be elected by a simple majority vote, as further outlined in Section 5.
- Shall have the term of one academic year.
- Shall be the team representative to the administration.
- Shall assist the Head Coach in the planning of all regattas and trips.
- Shall be responsible, with the help of the captains, for overseeing that equipment is properly loaded for trailering during all team trips.
- Shall delegate responsibilities as needed.
- Shall report to the Head Coach.
- Vice President
- Shall be elected by a simple majority vote, as further outlined in Section 5.
- Shall have the term of one academic year.
- Shall be responsible for creating advertisements for the team at the start of the academic year and steering an effort to promote the team during that time.
- Shall create and distribute the team roster to team members within 30 days of the first official day of practice each semester.
- Shall actively work to create and head fundraising efforts.
- Shall promote the team through social media outlets and keep up-to-date information on the team’s website.
- Shall organize the Banquet, which is to be held at the end of the Spring semester.
- Shall maintain the Constitution.
- Shall report to the President.
- Treasurer
- Shall be elected by a simple majority vote, as further outlined in Section 5.
- Shall have the term of one academic year.
- Shall meet with the Head Coach to set a budget for each semester.
- Shall present the aforementioned budget to all officers at the start of each semester.
- Shall meet with the Head Coach to determine semester dues as well as the costs associated with specific additional regattas and trips.
- Shall promptly collect all dues and other monies owed to the team.
- Shall be responsible for ordering team uniforms and merchandise.
- Shall report to the President.
- Men's Squad Captain & Women's Squad Captain
- Shall be elected by a simple majority vote, as further outlined in Section 5.
- Shall have the term of one academic year.
- Shall act as the main liaison between their squad’s rowers and the coaches.
- Shall be responsible, with the president, for overseeing that equipment is properly loaded for trailering during all team trips.
- Shall ensure all team members are acting in an appropriate manner during all practices and trips.
- Shall run ‘Captain’s Practices’ between the end of the fall season and the start of official winter practices.
- Shall report to the Coach.
- Elections
- All elections will be conducted by paper ballot.
- Elections will be run by the President.
- Elections will be held during the Banquet.
- Elections shall proceed in the order of: Men’s and Women’s Team Squad Captains, President, Vice President, and Treasurer.
- Voting for Squad Captains:
- Each squad member may choose to vote for one or two captains.
- Each voting squad member will write down either one or two names on one paper ballot to vote for the next captain(s) of his or her respective squad.
- The President will count the ballots and announce the winner(s).
- If a simple majority is not earned by one (two) person (people), the person with the lowest number of votes is dropped from the race and another round of voting takes place.
- This process continues until one (two) person (people) earns a simple majority.
- All Other Positions:
- Nominations will be accepted in advance of the election following a request for nominations from the President. Nominations will close just prior to voting.
- Those nominated may elect to accept or decline the nomination.
- Nominees will be given 90 seconds to make a speech.
- After all the nominees have given a speech, all members will write the name of their choice for the position on a paper ballot.
- The President will count the ballots and announce the winner.
- If one person does not earn a simple majority, the person with the lowest number of votes is dropped from the race and another round of voting takes place.
- This process continues until one person earns a simple majority.
- If the President is a nominee for a vote, the Vice President will conduct the election of that position.
- If an officer position becomes vacant during the course of the year, an election is immediately held to fill the position.
- 2/3 of the team must be present for the election, and the election will follow the procedures detailed above.
- Amendments
- Amendments to the Constitution may be submitted by any member of the team to the Vice President.
- The Vice President will disperse the proposed amendment to all currently active members of the team.
- The President will decide on and notify the team of the time and place at which a vote on the proposed amendment will be held.
- An amendment requires a two-thirds majority vote (by hand) of all those present at the vote in order to pass.
- Three-fourths of the team must be present at the meeting.
- If an amendment passes, the Vice President will alter the Constitution as necessary and disperse an updated version of the Constitution.
- If an amendment passes, the Webmaster will alter the Constitution as necessary on the team website.
